Getting LinkedIn Brazil

Popular business networking tool LinkedIn sent representatives from Canada and the US to host a workshop in São Paulo yesterday. The event was focused on speaking to their users in Brazil and gaining feedback on any local differences in networking behaviour here.

It’s no surprise that LinkedIn is circling Brazil and sending teams over, this is their fastest-growing market. The number of Brazilian users on LinkedIn last year increased by 428%, compared to 76% growth in India.

There are now 17.8 million Brazilians using the discussion groups to debate work and business, and an additional 1.5 million joining the groups each week.

Some 60% of users in Brazil use the site in Portuguese while a significant 40% use it in English, showing that many users are interested in projecting an international summary of their work and achievements. Interestingly, in the focus group, nobody seemed to use both languages – it was one or the other.

Many of the new LinkedIn tools and services, such as Skills and the news service Today, are still only available in English, as all new services are rolled out in English, but given the importance of the Brazilian market more Portuguese functionality was promised soon.

When asked if they planned to open a sales office in São Paulo (LatAm is managed from Canada), LinkedIn said that a decision has yet to be taken. Given the growth levels in Brazil and neighbouring markets it must be a decision they already have on the executive radar.

IT Decisions says

We would not usually rave about an individual product or service on these pages. As we stated in our own manifesto, we don’t do churnalism.

But LinkedIn is quite different.

Within a couple of months of switching on the lights at this title, we have a regular following of thousands of professionals, all with an interest in Brazil and the hi-tech service industry. Literally thousands of readers are checking this site every day and commenting here, on Twitter, or on LinkedIn.

It has been the combination of LinkedIn and Twitter that has allowed us to grow this title so rapidly. It is the professional network of choice for over 100m professionals now and it is therefore quite shocking to hear that such an important business tool remains blocked by some executives – discarded as a ‘waste of time’.

Where do you think the chief executives  banning LinkedIn will be a decade from now?
